The presidential candidate for Ahora Nación, Alfonso López Chao, started his campaign in the Puno city of Juliaca, where 18 people were murdered on January 9, 2023, during protests against the government of Dina Boluarte.
Before hundreds of people who gathered in Plaza Zarumilla, he began his presentation with a minute of silence for all the people who lost their lives in this part of the country.

The former rector of the National University of Engineering (UNI) did not hide his emotion at the large number of people who gathered, among which were delegations of candidates for the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies from various parts of the country.
He also took advantage of the great call to respond to his political adversaries regarding his prison detention in the 1970s, from which he was released through an amnesty.
Memory for the fallen
López Chao began by pointing out that “the dead rule when their example is followed”, “because the illustrious dead are not mourned, they are greeted, hailed, and venerated”, “We must continue with the example of those young people. [Hay] Raise the commitment to the country (…)”, he specified.
At another time he maintained that what currently exists in Puno is the need for justice. “There is hunger that is not quenched with food and thirst that is not quenched with water, it is the pride of men and women. It is their pride and their dignity,” he said.
He calls them garbage
The candidate for the presidential seat called those who run the Executive and Parliament “garbage” and called for the purpose of having a majority in Parliament so that he is not a kidnapped president.
“I don’t want to be a kidnapped president, tied to a congress with a majority that doesn’t let you do things. (…) We are here without money, without millions and without thugs. (…) We need the great push to finish things off. We need on April 12th to finish them off and cut off their necks in one fell swoop so that all the corruption goes away. We have not come to create one more force. To make history with these dead. That’s why I said, I put the sacred majesty of Peruvian history on these garbage that “They have captured that they have captured Congress and that they have captured the executive,” he said.
Don’t fuck around!
In dialogue with La República, he said that after seeing the large number of people who gathered in Puno, he said he felt vindicated and encouraged because after the latest attacks against him, citizens have shown solidarity with him.
“I think that [han] They felt the attacks against me were unfair and they have rebelled and come with me. They have felt that it is unfair. How are they going to say that they have robbed a bank, don’t screw around. I feel very encouraged. (…) The more they terrify me, look how I have grown,” he said.
He also acknowledged that he never thought he would be a candidate and everything was born spontaneously when he hosted Puno students at the UNI to protest against Dina Boluarte and assured that those responsible for his nomination are the “terruqueadores” and “murderers.”
“It was a coincidental event. It was an uncalculated event. I came to Puno where a rector, who does not belong to Ahora Nación, wanted to give me a distinction declaring me an illustrious visitor. The surprise is that all those who had gone to the protest had gathered in Puno and there the party was born. Whose fault was it? The terruqueadores, the murderers. I couldn’t know if I was going to see a protest. I didn’t know they were going to go to the UNI. I didn’t know I was going to see the council. university student. I didn’t know that a rector who is not from Ahora Nación was going to invite me to Puno,” he said.
