MIAMI, United States. — Former Cuban volleyball player Alexis Batte, a member of the island’s national teams in the eighties and nineties of the last century, died this Tuesday in Cuba at the age of 51, according to various reports that appeared on social networks and the Internet.
The Italian publication Volleyball Magazine reported that Batte died of “a disease against which he fought valiantly.”
Born on July 28, 1971 in the province of Villa Clara, Batte excelled in volleyball from the lower categories and his talent led him to the Cuban national team, with which he won a World League.
“This is one of the news that I would never have wanted to receive. Alexis Batte, a brother with whom I shared a team in Piacenza and in the Cuban national team, has just passed away. You brightened the day to everyone around you with your anecdotes. Damn, my brother, this one really hurt me. You left too soon. Former player Ihosvany Hernández, who was captain of the Cuban team, also lamented in social networks Batt’s death.
“Brother, you left us without saying goodbye. What pain makes me feel this news of your departure! I will always remember you with this smile and the joy and respect that I always knew you. You were an important part of my life and that of many Cuban volleyball players”.
Opposite left-handed with excellent technical conditions, Batte ventured into the powerful Italian Serie A1, playing with the Falconara, Padua and Piacenza clubs.
In accordance with Volleyball MagazineBatte is survived by his daughter Llaria, an eighteen-year-old passer born in Moncalieri (Turin), who already won the silver medal at the 2021 Junior World Championship and currently plays for Club Italia, in Serie A2.
