Alert specialist: beware of depression, in exile, it can be deadly

If an exile is feeling depressed or anxious, they should seek help. The recommendation is made by the psychologist Julia Araúz, who adds that seeking professional help can save their lives.

In recent days, the death of several Nicaraguans in exile in the United States has become known. The specialist explains that the beginning of the depressive stage, «It is when you live in another country and there is no sense of belonging, when we do not know where we are, what we are doing here (exile) and what is the horizon of our life.».

«Fleeing from the repression, I never thought this would last so long, we thought it would be fast»says an exile for this report. «We believed that we could return to our families, that the government was going to fall and that the persecution would end, today I live with the anxiety of wanting to return and not being able to do so»he complains.

Thousands of Nicaraguan migrants left their country in search of a better life, but it has not turned out as expected.

Another compatriot pointed out that one day he left with the hope of improving the precarious conditions in which he lived with his wife and children, but after a few months of being in the United States, his family separated, his wife decided to start a relationship with another person and their children are suffering from the absence of their father and the irremediable breakdown of their home.

Added to this, he faced the reality of unemployment, like thousands of compatriots who wander from state to state in the hope of finding a job and a place to live. He finally found a stable job and has started to generate income, but, «my life will never be the same»he pointed.

The important sense of belonging

The specialist explains that it is the feeling of personal identity that human beings develop in certain environments. For this, socialization is necessary. «Many times resocialization or unlearning what you have already learned and integrating into society depending on the circumstances, learning and interacting with other people is not easy»says.

In Aráuz’s opinion, it is precisely the lack of a sense of belonging that leads the exiles to fall into a depressive stage, many get sick and others eventually make wrong decisions such as suicide.

«Not being able to adapt to the new reality in which he lives, his life becomes chaos, because he does not know what the real meaning of life is.»he claimed. «Please, if you have depressive symptoms, seek help.»he insisted.
