The National Institute of Health is advancing with the necessary studies to determine if what is circulating is a more aggressive variant of the adenovirus, thousands of consultations in the country by affected children.
Colombian News
Consultations for respiratory problems arrive daily and the most affected are minors; today there is a higher concern, since there is a virus that has become predominant, the adenovirus.
And it is that added to the winter wave in Colombia has caused the respiratory peak in children and adults to increase.
Currently, children under the age of 2 are those who have been identified as being most at risk.
Also, so far there is no vaccine that helps control the adenovirus.
What there is, are preventive measures that help save lives, since the disease has become more aggressive and is currently second leading cause of death from respiratory infection.
“It was between the fifth and sixth virus that circulated in frequency in children, today we have data from 27 centers nationwide, we are talking about it being the second virus in frequency of circulation at this time,” explained Juan Pablo Londoño, infectologist of the Colombian Society of Pediatrics.
warning signs
Symptoms start from congestion, cough, to possible respiratory distress reaching the point of needing oxygen.
That is why it is important that parents are attentive to any warning signs.
«It is not normal for a child to stop eating and vomit everything that is eaten; It is time to consult for emergencies ”, they warn.
If he starts with respiratory distress that leads to his ribs collapsing, his nose flapping, the child turning purple in the mouth or hands, “that is certainly an alarm sign,” said the infectologist.
However, we must not forget the preventive measures against respiratory diseases:
- Hand washing.
- The use of masks.
- Avoid crowded spaces.
- Have vaccination up to date.
- Do not stop breastfeeding.
