The Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), Rio de Janeiro section, issued a warning to the category that as of this Wednesday (10), the flexibility of attire provided for in State Law 10,825/2025, which exempts the use of suits and ties in public offices in Rio de Janeiro, came into force, due to the high temperatures that hit the state at this time of year.
Known as the “Paletó Law”, the matter, sanctioned in June this year by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj), determines that the measure is in force between December 10th and March 31st of every year, when temperatures are highest.
“It is important that we make this OABRJ achievement worthwhile and that the legal profession knows that this law is already in force and is valid throughout the state of Rio de Janeiro, in public places, courts, notary offices, without any distinction. Therefore, we hope that all courts comply with state law, after all, those located in Rio are subject to state law”, declared the president of the section, Ana Tereza Basílio.
TRT
At the Regional Labor Court of the 1st Region (TRT-RJ) the measure has been in force since November 24th and runs until March 20th, 2026. The decision of the presidency of the TRT-RJ makes it optional for magistrates, civil servants and lawyers to wear a jacket and tie when checking in and traveling through 1st and 2nd degree units. The exemption, motivated by high summer temperatures, covers participation in 1st degree hearings and in class sessions, specialized sections, special bodies and full courts.
The presidency reinforces that, despite the flexibility, “dress when performing duties must be appropriate and compatible with decorum, respect and the image of the Judiciary. Therefore, dress pants and a closed dress shirt must be worn.”
The determination took into account the temperature in Rio de Janeiro, during the summer and in the month preceding it, which generally exceeds 40º Celsius, with the thermal sensation reaching up to 50º Celsius.
