The mayor of Rocha, Alejo Umpierrez, has become the defender of “responsible freedom” and has attacked the “prohibitionism” of alcohol on the roads. According to him, with 0.3 grams of alcohol in the blood, “accidents practically do not exist.” At the national level, Uruguay has a zero alcohol behind the wheel policy, which means that it is strictly prohibited to drink alcoholic beverages before getting behind any motorized vehicle.

We showed that fun without predation was possible. Fun without excess. Without physiological needs at the doors of the houses or sex in the gardens. Let’s hope it’s the beginning of the revaluation of the spa”, said the right-wing mayor and historical militant of the National Party. From these political shops, various leaders have expressed their positions against the zero alcohol policy, and have ensured that there is the possibility of driving a vehicle without problems having consumed a certain amount.

Umpierrez added: “I voted 0.3 in the chamber. With 0.3 accidents practically do not exist. I think there is a demonization. Prohibitionism threatens responsible freedom. But the discussion is already lauded ”.

Zero tolerance really works: this is what the statistics say

Zero tolerance policies for alcohol when driving are a crucial tool in the fight against traffic accidents. Numerous scientific studies have shown that these policies significantly reduce the number of accidents and deaths on the roads.

A study published in the journal Addiction in 2018 found that the implementation of zero tolerance policies for alcohol in several European countries it reduced mortality in traffic accidents by 11%. Other research conducted in Canada revealed that the implementation of a zero alcohol policy in the province of Ontario reduced fatal accidents by 23%.

In addition, a study from the University of Texas at Austin found that the implementation of zero-tolerance policies for alcohol in several states in the The United States reduced the number of fatal accidents by 8%.

These results add to a wide range of scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of zero alcohol tolerance policies in reducing traffic accidents.
