Prosecutor Domingo Pérez warned that the South Interoceanic casefor which the former president Alejandro Toledeitherwould represent one of the largest bribes given by the Odebrecht company in Peru.
“There have already been some other sentences that have been handed down in the Lava Jato case, but if you want to put as relevance or importance the condition that one of the accused has of having been a former president, definitely yes. If you put it in that consideration (of being the largest bribe paid withinLava Jatoin Peru), surely,” he told the prosecutor to RPP.
Likewise, he added: “But there are also other cases that we hope this year can conclude, not only the case of theSouth Interoceanicwhich involves the former presidentAlejandro Toledo; but the ‘Metro de Lima’ case, which we have also already entered into the final phase of that trial; the case against former President Ollanta Humala, which has also already focused on the final phase; and we understand that these cases are going to conclude this year.”
Meanwhile, the lawyerformer president Alejandro Toledo,Roberto Su Rivadeneyrarevealed that the Peruvian-Israeli businessmanJosef Maiman RapaportHe presented account statements in which certain amounts had not been declared before the Attorney General’s Office, questioning that the Prosecutor’s Office did not charge him an additional 15 million dollars to those indicated when he availed himself of effective collaboration.
The deceasedJosef Maiman Rapaport, close friend of the former presidentAlejandro Toledowas an effective collaborator in an agreement with the Public Ministry, approved by the Judiciary on December 30, 2019. It should be noted that in August 2017, Maiman had requested to benefit from said collaboration and declare to the Peruvian prosecutor’s office that His bank accounts were used by the former president to hide the bribes that Odebrecht would have deposited him.
During Alejandro Toledo’s hearing, which will define the request for 20 years in prison for thealleged crimes of collusion and money launderingto the detriment of the State in theSouth Interoceanic case,He was consulted about his late friend Josef Maiman. To which Toledo responded: “He was a man who was not very sacrosanct in business. And I say that not out of secrecy, but because it is published,” said the former president of Peru Alejandro Toledo.
What is the Interoceanic Case?
The Interoceanic Highway is a project that began in 2005, during the presidency of Alejandro Toledo. Then,ToledoHe mentioned that the work could not be completed during his mandate due to the time it would require, but stressed that the 2,600 kilometers of the highway would facilitate the integration of Peru with South America. “I know that we will not be able to finish this work during my administration, but we will start it with force. There are 2,600 kilometers in concession. This highway is of great importance because it will allow Peru to be decentralized and integrated with South America.”
In that year, the Peruvian State signed a contract with the CONIRSA consortium, which included Odebrecht, Graña y Montero, ICCGSA and JJC, to execute sections 2 and 3 of the Interoceanic Highway project. The Intersur consortium, composed of Andrade Gutiérrez, Camargo Correa and Queiroz Galvao, won the tender for section 4. However, in 2016, a corruption scandal was uncovered involving Odebrecht, which had paid bribes to several former presidents, including Alejandro Toledo, to secure million-dollar contracts.
