The former president Alejandro Toledo was interrogated by the prosecutor Jose Domingo Perez this Friday, October 11, for the case South Interoceanic. In his statements, former President Toledo revealed that the businessman Joseph Maiman covered two installments of his debt with the bank for his home located in Camacho in the La Molina district.
According to Alejandro Toledo, he acquired this home in several installments in 1997 and since the payments were very high, it was difficult for him to pay on time. It is so Joseph Maiman offers to pay the last two installments as a way of thanking him because Toledo had previously helped the businessman’s wife in a program to learn English.
“He came to my house for dinner with his wife and asked me how long I had been paying on the house. He was worried about my interest rate, so he said, ‘Let me help you,’ and then I found out he had paid off the last two bills.” , he said at the hearing.
Toledo’s statement was given within the framework of the investigation for the crimes of collusion and money laundering, having allegedly received bribes of more than 30 million dollars from the Brazilian company. Odebrecht.
Alejandro Toledo: Who was the businessman Josef Maiman?
Joseph Maimanbefore his death in October 2021denounced the former president Alejandro Toledo for the bribes he had received from Odebrecht. The businessman was a key part in the crimes for which Toledo is being investigated since he was a very close friend.
The former president is investigated by sections 2 and 3 of the Interoceánica Sur case and it was the businessman who, before Richard Concepción Carhuancho, affirmed that he received large sums of money from Brazilian companies, all on behalf of his friend, Alejandro Toledo. As expected, these statements further complicated the former president’s situation. Maiman revealed that these deliveries began in mid-2006, according to him the amounts ranged from 34 and 35 million dollars.
Likewise, he said that 21 million of that amount went directly to Toledo and that the remaining money would go as part of compensation to Odebrecht for a failed contract in the country of Colombia.
“I don’t remember exactly when, Alejandro Toledo tells me that Camargo Correa will also make payments related to the South Interoceanic project (…) The amount would be between four and five million dollars,” Maiman mentioned at that time before the prosecutor.
What is the Interoceanic Case?
The Interoceanic Highway is the one that connects Peru with the country of Brazil. This project began in 2005, under the government of Alejandro Toledo. On that occasion, the president said that such work could not be completed during his administration because it was going to take time, but that the 2,600 kilometers were going to allow Peru to integrate with South America.
“I know that we will not be able to finish this work during my administration, but we will start it with force. There are 2,600 kilometers in concession. This highway is of great importance because it will allow Peru to be decentralized and integrated with South America,” he said at that time.
The Peruvian State and CONIRSA consortium that grouped companies Odebrecht, Graña y Montero, ICCGSA and JJC, signed the contract for the execution of sections 2 and 3 of the project. In turn, the consortium Intersur, made up of Andrade Gutiérrez, Camargo Correa and Queiroz Galvao, They obtained the tender for section 4 of the Interoceanic Highway, all of this occurred in 2005.
Already in 2016, one of the largest corruption scandals involving several officials was uncovered. It happens that the Odebrecht company would have given bribes to former presidents, one of them Alejandro Toledo, to obtain million-dollar contracts.
