Senator Alejandro “Pacha” Sánchez will officially assume the presidency of the Senate and the General Assembly on February 15, 2025, at the beginning of the 50th Legislature. In this act, the President -elect of the Republic, Yamandú Orsi, and the elected vice president, Carolina Cosse, will take an oath.
Sánchez, who headed the 609 list, the most voted within the Frente Amplio in the 2024 elections, will say goodbye to his bank in the Senate on March 1, to assume the position of Secretary of the Presidency. His position will be occupied by Nicolás Viera.
With a long political career, Alejandro Sánchez began his career in the Popular Participation Movement (MPP), occupying various positions both at the departmental and national level. He was deputy between 2010 and 2020 and assumed as a senator after the resignation of José Mujica. During his time in Parliament, he joined key commissions such as the Treasury, Livestock and Industry, in addition to representing Uruguay in the Latin American Parliament.
In the 2024 elections, Sánchez played a crucial role as campaign manager of Yamandú Orsi, who was elected president. Once he assumes as Secretary of the Presidency, Sánchez will leave his role in Parliament to devote himself to his new function in the Executive.
