The presidents of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), and the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), spoke about Operation Containment, carried out this Tuesday (28) in Rio de Janeiro, which resulted in at least 64 deaths. 
According to the state government, in the operation 2,500 civil and military police officers were mobilized in actions in the Alemão and Penha complexes, with the aim of capturing criminal leaders and containing the territorial expansion of Comando Vermelho.
Alcolumbre, who also presides over the National Congress, said that the House is following with attention and concern “the serious events recorded”.
“The National Congress will remain attentive to the unfolding of the crisis and is available to contribute, in a responsible and democratic way, with legislative solutions that strengthen public security, the fight against organized crime and the protection of the lives of Brazilians”, said Alcolumbre in a note.
The president of the Senate also highlighted that the plenary approved this Tuesday (28) Bill (PL) 226/24, which deals with the legal framework for combating crime, reinforcing protection instruments for public agents and the civilian population. The proposal now goes to presidential approval.
“The Presidency of the Federal Senate expresses support for the actions of the security forces in the fight against crime, factions and organized crime, reaffirming the need for a collective and joint effort by all actors in the Brazilian State to protect citizens from the violence that is plaguing the country”, he added.
THE security operation It was the deadliest in 15 years, surpassing the number of deaths from the operation in Jacarezinho, considered a massacre, which left 28 people dead in 2021.
On a social network, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta, said he was closely monitoring the operation against organized crime in Rio de Janeiro.
“We reaffirm our commitment to public security and combating violence projects — one of the greatest concerns of the Brazilian population. Under my presidency, the Chamber approved almost 30 matters in the area, such as the increase in repression against criminal organizations, criminalization of city control and protection of public agents involved in combating organized crime. We will continue to focus on advancing these issues”, he stated.
Motta also said he is studying the vote on public security projects against criminal factions and that he will include the proposals on the Chamber’s agenda.
Operation
According to the state government, the operation was launched after more than a year of investigation and 60 days of planning. The operation complies with hundreds of arrest and search and seizure warrants issued by the Court following investigations by the Narcotics Repression Police Station (DRE).
The partial balance records 81 prisoners, 75 rifles seized and a large quantity of drugs still being accounted for.
The city of Rio de Janeiro entered stage 2 of attention, which means the risk of a high-impact occurrence.
According to the Operations and Resilience Center of Rio de Janeiro City Hall, roads around the complexes of Alemão, Penha, Chapadão, São Francisco Xavier, in the north zone; Parish, in Jacarepaguá; and Taquara, in the southwest zone, are subject to temporary closures due to police incidents. More than 100 lines had their itineraries changed.
