The Vice President of the Republic, Geraldo Alckmin, said on Friday (26), in a lecture in São Paulo, that the meeting between President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and US President Donald Trump is a “first step” for the US tariff resolution to Brazil. The meeting is expected to take place next week.
“I want to greet the meeting, though fast, but the Meeting between Presidents Lula and Trump [na assembleia geral da ONU]who gave at least a first step. We will try to take the subsequent steps for us to remove these problems and be able to walk faster to solve the tariff issue, ”he said at an event at the Institution Insper, in São Paulo.
Alckmin argued that trade between countries should be “winning”, that is, with both participants succeeding, and rules based.
“Foreign trade well done is win-win. He is more efficient: I buy him, cheaper. I’m more efficient: I sell to him. Society wins. But it needs to have rules, because otherwise the great will kill the little one.”
The vice president pointed out, however, that the performance of the World Trade Organization (WTO), a mission to ensure the rules of international trade, was limited by the United States.
“We have to have rules for the whole world, trade rules. But unfortunately it doesn’t work. Why? [na OMC] and gain in the first instance. [A decisão] It is not worth until there is a decision of the second instance. Then, in the second instance, the United States does not designate its representatives. She [a OMC] cannot act. So, kind of the WTO was innocuous, ”he said.
On the 23rd, US President Donald Trump said he intends to meet President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at next week. He praised the Brazilian head of state calling him “very pleasant man”, with whom he had “excellent chemistry” for a brief meeting.
Trump spoke at the United Nations General Assembly soon after President Lula. Traditionally, the president of Brazil makes the opening speech of the UN Annual Assemblies.
The US President said the tariffs applied against Brazil and other countries are a matter of defending the sovereignty and security of his country.
