The Secretary of National Security, Kristi Noem, described the “Alcatraz Caimán” of Florida as a model for the Immigrant Detention Centers administered by the State, and said that the Department of National Security (DHS) hopes to create other similar sites.
“The locations we are considering are next to the landing clues, which will help us achieve unprecedented efficiency,” said Noem.
The “Alcatraz Caimán”, built near the training and transition airport Dade-Collier in an area of 78 square kilometers surrounded by the Everglades, has been criticized for its bad conditions.
The detainees have complained of food full of worms, flooded floors, insects everywhere and poor air conditioning.

Noem declared that similar sites are being considered in Arizona, Nebraska and Louisiana.
Although the Department of National Security (DHS) has abundant funds from the “great bill” to build new detention centers that can double the ability to detention up to 100,000 people, Noem presented the matter as an initiative to save costs.
The facilities are cheaper than those available through private contractors and hope is to have migrants in the facilities – and deport them quickly – in a matter of days, “facilitating a quick response.”
“All are strategically designed to ensure that people remain in beds less days,” said Noem. “It can be much more efficient once they obtain their audiences, due process and documentation.”
