Two-time Olympic champion Alberto Juantorena, president of the Cuban Athletics Federationremained in critical stable condition this Monday, in accordance with official sources.
The outstanding 71-year-old former athlete, winner of the titles in the 400 and 800 meter dash at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, is hospitalized in the Pedro Kouri Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK)in Havana, a reference center for Cuban medicine and science.
From there last Friday his complicated state of health was made known, presenting bronchopneumonia and cardiovascular decompensation “with a history of a picture of COVID-19 acquired abroad, as a result of which complications have appeared”, according to a note published in the sports portal Hit.
A day later, and through the same medium, transcended that the analyzes carried out at the IPK on Juantorena confirmed that he suffered from a dengue serotype 3, and due to the persistence of bacterial pneumonia “he was on mechanical ventilation and supported with vasoactive drugs, improving parameters in both cases.”
The most recent update of the medical report, also reviewed by the specialized website, indicates that the patient maintained a stable critical diagnosis, but the radiological improvement was maintained.

The multidisciplinary group that attends to the so-called “Elegant of the tracks” reported that he was still without sedation, slowly waking up. Also that it remains ventilated with adequate oxygen saturation (SO2), but that work was being done on its detoxification.

Alberto Juantorena is considered one of the great athletes of the 20th century and one of the greatest Cuban athletes in history. His current state of health is a cause for concern not only for the sports movement on the Island, but also for his numerous followers inside and outside of Cuba.
