President Alberto Fernandez held this Sunday from the Residence of Olivos a virtual meeting with the High Commissioner of the United Nations Organization (UN) for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, and Foreign Minister Santiago Cafieroboth in Geneva, where they will participate this Monday in the start of the 49th session of the Human Rights Council of the organism that This year Argentina presides for the first time.
Fernández, Bachelet and Cafiero exchanged points of view on the situation of the global human rights and also about the war escalation in Ukraine.
At that point, the President remarked the “Argentina’s firm rejection of the use of armed force by the Russian Federation and the demand for the cessation of hostilities, essential for resume a path of dialogue and negotiation“, according to the Foreign Ministry in a statement.

The president argued that Argentina’s “actions are always based on the defense of and full respect for international law, the sovereignty of States and their territorial integrity, the peaceful settlement of disputes, and full and profound respect for human rights.”
Along with Bachelet, they agreed to “claim and reaffirm the principles on which a diplomatic and peaceful solution must be based, calling all parties to the dialogue table following the principles of the United Nations charter.”
During the meeting, Bachelet welcomed the presidency of Alberto Fernández in CELAC, where Argentina holds the Pro Tempore Presidency for the year 2022, and the head of state promised to work to “strengthen Human Rights in the region”.
Cafiero held this meeting with Bachelet as part of his participation in the High Level Segment of the 49th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, which will begin this Monday.
The permanent representative of Argentina to the United Nations in Geneva, Federico Villegas, who holds the presidency of the Human Rights Council for the year 2022, also participated in the meeting.
