ALBA members suspend Bolivia’s new government “for pro-imperialist behavior”

Rodrigo Paz Bolivia ALBA

The member countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) consider that the statements of the new president of Bolivia, Rodrigo Paz, about Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba, saying that “they are not democratic” are “totally unacceptable.”

The member countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) decided to suspend the newly elected government of Bolivia, for its “anti-Bolivarian, anti-Latin American, pro-imperialist and colonialist conduct”, which they affirm is not in accordance with the principles of this alliance.

However, they indicated that the decision does not affect the permanent, emotional and solidarity ties with the people of Bolivia. They affirmed that they will continue working and accompanying their development and well-being.

On October 19, Rodrigo Paz was elected, in the second round, as president of Bolivia with 54% of the votes cast. The new president came to power with a proposal to move away from extremes.

One of Paz’s priorities is to reestablish diplomatic relations with the United States, which have been suspended since 2008, during Evo Morales’ first term; with which he hopes to open the country’s doors to multilateral organizations.

He also reported that he will not invite representatives from Nicaragua, Cuba or Venezuela to his inauguration, scheduled for November 8, because “they are not democratic.”

For the other ALBA countries, the statements about these three countries “are totally unacceptable” because they say that they ignore the principles of “respect, sovereignty and cooperation” that underpin the organization, as well as the integration and values of its people.

In the document, the members of this alliance explained that the suspension measure will be maintained while the political conditions in Bolivia are evaluated.
