Alarming increase in gunpowder burns in Colombia, there are already 156

In a new report from the National Institute of Health, it was confirmed that 156 people were burned with gunpowder in Colombia, of which 54 cases were registered in minors and 102 in adults over 18 years of age.

So far, the health authorities have not reported victims of gunpowder nationwide.

The study revealed that the figure is much lower than last year when 248 injured people and two victims were reported in the same period.

The evaluation showed that 48 over the age of 18 were injured while under the influence of alcohol.

The largest cases of burns were concentrated in Antioquia and Bogotá (19), followed by Cauca and Magdalena (11), Cundinamarca 9, Cali and Santander 7, Córdoba and Nariño 6, Tolima and Atlántico 5.

Poor handling of items like totes caused the greatest number of people burned, followed by flyers, volcanoes, rockets, and flares.

According to the National Institute of Health, in the last period of intensified surveillance, which included December 2021 to January 2022, with a cutoff of January 1, there was a rebound in the figures in the national consolidated and the country reached 1,052 injured .

“A figure that far exceeded the figures atypical for the 2020-2021 period, amid the restrictions of the pandemic; and exceeds those reported in the last six years, where the country in the 2015-2016 period reported 845 cases as of January 1,” the report indicates.

It should be noted that from the 2018-2019 period, the figures had been declining with 778 injured, numbers that fell due to the confinement measures in the pandemic.

“For the 2020-2021 period, the country reported, after the end of the year celebrations, 681 injured,” he said. Likewise, the number of minors affected increased. Of those 1,052 reports, 315 were under 18 years of age. and this figure also reported an increase compared to the previous surveillance period 2020-2021, of 32.91% .
