Alarmed organizations: Three femicides in less than two weeks and 19 in four months

Feminist organizations are alarmed by the wave of violence against women in Nicaragua. Three femicides have been reported in less than two weeks in the month of April and at least 19 women have been murdered in the first four months of the year in national territory and 10 abroad.

The latest femicide victim was identified as Jenelieth Pena Lopez, 19 years old. Her body was found on Wednesday morning, face down and shirtless, in a deep and dangerous riverbed located in Villa Nueva, near Ticomo, in District Three of Managua.

The body was found by some children who were looking for porridge to fish near the riverbed, who notified the residents of the area.

“Disregarded State”

Given the increase in gender violence, the sociologist Maria Teresa Blandonwho is also a feminist activist, accused the government of Daniel Ortega at the end of January of promoting a “Disregarded State” against sexist violence.

The activist also complained to the government for the “lack of action in the face of a multi-causal problem”, which claims the lives of women, mainly in rural areas of the country.

“We find it completely offensive and irresponsible, on the part of the regime, that the only thing it offers is the publication of poorly made primers, which do not even have clear concepts to understand what the causes of violence are and that it evades ruling on any responsibility of the State,” Blandón said.

they demand justice

Another lawyer, a member of another feminist organization outlawed and confiscated by the regime in Nicaragua, asked the police authorities not to leave the death of the 19-year-old girl unpunished.

“We demand that the authorities, both the Police and the justice system, guarantee that this crime by Jenelieth Peña does not go unpunished and that the full weight of the law falls on the person(s) responsible», asks the also sociologist and activist for women’s rights.

“It is unfortunate how they are murdering our women, the murderers no longer respect the lives of young girls,” he reproached.

Unofficially, it was handled this Thursday that the police have arrested two people, suspected of having murdered Jenelieth. However, until the preparation of this report, it has not provided further details on the progress of the investigations.
