Air transport drives growth in services sector in June

Air transport was the segment that most influenced the 1.7% growth in the services sector between May and June this year. “The drop in airfares in June had an important influence on understanding this growth in air transport,” explains IBGE researcher Rodrigo Lobo.

Other segments that contributed to the 1.7% increase in services from May to June were event organization, card loyalty programs and pipeline transport.

With a 1.7% increase in June, the services sector reached a record level in June. The five activities surveyed showed growth: transportation (1.8%), information and communication (2%), professional, administrative and complementary services (1.3%), other services (1.6%) and services provided to families (0.3%).

Tourism grows

The aggregate of tourism activities, analyzed separately from the five activities, also increased (3.4%), after falling by 0.4% in May. As a result, the tourism segment is 7.7% above the pre-pandemic level (February 2020) and 0.1% below the highest point in the series (February 2014).

The IBGE also announced that it will start researching – starting in September – the performance of tourism activities in five more states, in addition to the 12 federation units currently analyzed.

According to the IBGE, the states of Amazonas, Pará, Rio Grande do Norte, Alagoas and Mato Grosso will join Ceará, Bahia, Pernambuco, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Goiás and the Federal District.
