Due to the increase in fuel costs, the prices of airline tickets will rise “without a doubt”, warned Willie Walsh, director general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
In statements to the BBC Sunday Morning programWalsh said that oil prices have soared at a time when economies are recovering from the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, so the costs will be passed on to consumers.
In that sense, he explained that tourists should prepare for the increase in flight prices. “Flying will be more expensive for consumers, without a doubt”, he asserted. The executive added that thehigh oil price” I know “will reflect in higher ticket prices”.
It should be noted that the price of a barrel of Brent oil for delivery in September ended this Monday in the London futures market at US$ 107.10, 0.075% more than at the end of the previous session. Since the pandemic and due to conflicts, crude oil has exceeded US$100.
On the other hand, the former CEO of British Airways also considered that London’s Heathrow airport “should have prepared better” to avoid a recent cancellation of 61 flights due to the impossibility of managing the high number of passengers passing through its facilities.
In this regard, Heathrow responded that Walsh’s comments were “misinformed”.
