Aidé Cristina Vera, a 56-year-old mother, grandmother, lawyer and activist, is running for her first elective office. She aspires to be one of the next deputies for the period 2023-2028 for the Patria Querida (PQ) party.
She is known for being part of the organization Ciudadanos Autoconvocados Comision Escrache (CACE), which has been fighting corruption and impunity in the public service since 2018. Precisely, its main tool in the fight to force the resignation of corrupt politicians is through the demonstrations and escrache.
He states that he wants to represent that person who needs to bring food home with dignity. And create laws that prevent corruption and support the welfare of citizens.
How are your expectations?
I recently entered politics but I already have a good track record with my anti-corruption group CACE, which is the Escrache Commission in the fight against corruption and impunity. Through strategies and other legal actions, in the control of criminal proceedings, also with demonstrations and other actions, we managed to disassociate several important politicians, accused of acts of corruption, from Parliament. My commitment is the same, that frontal fight against corruption and impunity, with the difference that now we will propose laws that punish corruption, it will be my new challenge.
How did you decide to enter?
From indignation to action that we have always had as a parameter. They have invited me in several games to be part of their teams and I accepted with the PQ. I accepted with them because I have been following their decisions in the Chamber of Deputies and I see myself reflected in those parliamentarians who today represent the caucus, where they really demonstrated excellent parliamentary action that really represents the interests of citizens and the country, acting well to the good of citizenship we can live better.
How did you get to Patria Querida?
I was in talks with other parties. But it was the deputy Rocío Vallejo who invited me to be part of the team of candidates for deputies for Asunción or Central. But since I live in Asunción, I opted for the capital. I have raised my voice without having privileges and I will do so with greater emphasis if I reach the Chamber of Deputies, to represent the citizenry in the frontal fight against corruption and impunity.
What do you want to offer citizens?
Renewing the Legislative Power must be the watchword of all Paraguayans. Betting on transparency, access to public information and citizen participation are fundamental axes of any good government. We are going to install the culture of all values. In that sense, Aidé Vera is going to represent all the citizens of the country. Of course, the citizens of Asuncion will be the ones who will give me their votes, but I will be representing all Paraguayans, creating laws that are committed to the welfare of the citizen, to the interests of the country.
What will be some of your projects to present?
My axis of work will be the fight against public corruption, support everything that our population develops, generate equality. Advocate for laws that benefit the entire country. In that effort, I have several projects related to education, imprescriptibility of trials for public corruption, the State salary policy, totally unfair, restructuring the country’s budget. We are in this effort, working our candidacy on the basis of principles and values, I want to be the voice of citizens in Parliament.
How are you seeing the Concertación?
We see very favourably. From the Patria Querida (PQ) party, we have confirmed the vice president, Mrs. Patricia Dos Santos, of the presidential candidate Sebastián Villarejo. She is going to be an excellent person and representative as vice president for 2023. We are going to bet on an honest, decent and patriotic person like Seba Villarejo. He has the makings of a statesman which is what our country needs.
How do you see Abdo’s management in these 4 years?
It is a useless and corrupt government, they have shown us this in the pandemic. To date, they have gone unpunished, they overcharge with unnecessary works, such as the Ñanduti bridge, they recently carried out another underground work that is a danger to the citizens who want to pass through that tunnel. And other works that were overbilled, high costs that really go to the detriment of the state coffers. We recently saw the vice president declared to be significantly corrupt. He is also a big liar because he did not resign from the vice presidency as he promised.
THE DATA: From the council, Vera wants to promote “The city of children”, an undertaking to give attention to street children. There they will be taught trades teach them trades, they will be able to study and live with dignity.
