Agustín Carstens receives the King of Spain Award in Economics

“He has been a leading player in the main transformations of the Mexican economy in recent decades: macroeconomic stabilization after the “tequila crisis”; modernization of the regulatory framework of the Mexican financial system; reform of the tax and pension systems of the public sector, and the autonomy regime of Banco de México. In short, it has promoted Mexico’s transition to an emerging market highly integrated into the international economy, with one of the most sophisticated public debt markets in the emerging world,” says the BIS in his statement.

The agency explained that the jury that decided the award was made up of the Governor and Deputy Governor of the Bank of Spain, Pablo Hernández de Cos and Álvaro Rodríguez Bereijo, respectively, as well as José Ramón Álvarez Rendueles, Rodolfo Martín Villa, José Luis Feito Higueruela, Julio Segura Sanchez and Carmen Reinhart.

What is the King of Spain Prize for Economics?

The King of Spain Award for Economics was established in 1986 to recognize the scientific and professional careers in economics of personalities from both Spain and Latin America.

Agustín Carstens, who was born in 1958 in Mexico City and has a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago, is the current general director of the BIS. In Mexico he was Secretary of the Treasury and Governor of the Central Bank.
