He Special Fund for Agricultural Development (Feda) highlighted this Wednesday the national reach of the Program for the Relaunch of the Coconut Sector, when presenting the results of its first three years of execution, a period in which the recovery of this crop in different areas of the country.
The director of the entity Hecmilio Galvanreported that through the program more than 564,000 seedlings of coconut to 2,265 producers in municipalities of the 31 provinces, with an estimated investment of 75 million pesos.
- He indicated that the initiative has generated renewed interest in coconut production, even in provinces where it was not previously grown significantly.
Galván explained that the program has impacted both rural and urban communities, with the completion of 136 training sessions that benefited 5,229 producers and entrepreneurs. These actions have contributed to strengthening the technical capabilities of the sector and promoting new plantings in the sector.
Cooperation agreements
Among the highlighted achievements are the installation of 11 nurseries for the production of seedlings of different varieties of coconut and the possible planting of more than 40,000 tasks of land, which could generate an estimated annual production of 80 million nuts, with a value close to 4,000 million pesos.
The official also highlighted the agreements of inter-institutional cooperation and international collaboration with Mexico, which have allowed the transfer of technical and scientific knowledge for the sustainable management of the crop, as well as the control of pests and diseases.
According to the Fedathe program has laid the foundation for the recovery, diversification and coconut industrialization in the Dominican Republic, strengthening national production and the economic potential of the sector.
