Agricultural insurance is promoted to mitigate the risks and volatility of the sector

The Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) has been developing an agricultural insurance policy, which seeks to be an instrument to manage risk, the volatility of the sector and attend to the sheep industry. “There are several cases of producers who have seen their flock of sheep attacked and are very affected, so this insurance mechanism allows them to preserve that capital and the producer can continue in the business,” said the MGAP undersecretary, Ignacio Buffa.

Currently, as reported by the undersecretary of MGAP, Juan Ignacio Buffa, the portfolio is working on three major aspects related to insurance.

The first, which is traditional, called “farm insurance”, consists of allocating part of the farm fund to producers to subsidize the insurance premium. This mechanism, according to Buffa, is essential to resolve crop loss when inclement weather occurs.

The second insurance, which is linked to the active policy that has been taken since this current administration, consists of insurance for sheep flocks regarding predators.

“This insurance is available through the State Insurance Bank (BSE) and the MGAP subsidizes part of the premium. It is an annual insurance that, in addition to the attack of predators, contemplates other elements and we consider that it is a policy that complements the strategy that is carried out associated with the identification and castration of dogs, by which this instrument allows the producers’ capital to be preserved before the cases in which dogs damage the flocks”, said Buffa.

He added that there are several cases of producers who have seen their flock of sheep attacked and are very affected, so this insurance mechanism allows them to preserve that capital and the producer can continue in the business.

Meanwhile, the hierarch explained that the third line of insurance that is promoted from the MGAP has to do with agricultural insurance.

Zero VAT in hotels for Uruguayans

Maldonado, the Ministry of Tourism and the Municipality launched the 2022-2023 summer season. There it was announced that Uruguayan tourists will access a zero rate of VAT on hotels.

Minister Tabaré Viera said that there are already “good signs” that anticipate a good season. Among these signs is the arrival of cruise ships, with 112 confirmed between Montevideo and Punta del Este. The first arrives in the first days of December.

The national director of Tourism, Roque Baudean, highlighted the zero rate for internal tourism. “I think it is a fair measure for both the user and the hotel business sector, since tourism activity comes from a very important crisis, which hit very hard in times of pandemic”, and said that “it is fair for all Uruguayans who did internal tourism”.

Bauden explained that the law is missing to implement it, but that he considers that in the next few days it will be in Parliament.

For his part, the Fernandino mayor stressed that the season launch would take place in Maldonado. “I think Maldonado deserved national recognition that we contribute a lot to tourism,” he said.
