On Tuesday morning, Fernando Lugo, first vice president of the Senate and former president of the Republic, was in the Upper House, he had to be transferred to an emergency care center due to a change in his health. In the hospital, he was referred to an intensive care unit (ICU) where he underwent surgery due to a Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA).
Leonardo Gómez Berniga, a political analyst, said that the next few hours will be decisive in knowing the political scenario that Fernando Lugo’s state of health will leave. He stressed that the former president represents a relevant figure for what is a Coalition project because of what he symbolizes. “He was the first and only president in democratic history who was able to defeat the Colorado Party. His identity and legitimacy is mainstreamed throughout the Concertación. Inside the country there are no possible opposition candidates without talking about where Lugo plays from, ”he said.
He anticipated that it will be difficult to see an active candidacy of the senator. “For the Concertación, the biggest challenge will be how to integrate the presidential badge, I do not think it will affect much, but I do think it will have an impact on the legislative project due to the composition of lists in the Senate that the Guasu Front will occupy in the next elections,” he said.
He maintained that it is possible to speak of a Coalition without Fernando Lugo, although he warned that it would be difficult. “The figure of agreement and alliances were born without him. It is clear that in this Agreement it is very difficult to think without Lugo being there”, he commented.
FERREIRO
Guillermo Ferreiro, representative of the Coalition, expressed for his part that the priority at this time is not the political aspect, but the human side of the situation. “What worries us is that former President Lugo gets well. We are here to accompany you as little as we can. What concerns us is his health and we are here to accompany and help the family as little as we can, “he said.
He stressed that Lugo is a symbol of unity for all the leftist parties. “I think he will be present and in 2023 we will give each other a big hug to celebrate the victory,” he said.
