Agrarian reform: Government will buy 3 million hectares from ranchers

The National Government and the ranchers of the country agreed to purchase of 3 million hectares. This operation falls within the agrarian reform promoted by President Gustavo Petro.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Cecilia López, assured that “We have reached a full agreement with Fedegan and the country’s ranchers to buy 3 million hectares from them. This is a historic act and becomes the third component of the agrarian reform“..

The other two keys to the Government’s agrarian reform, which are already underway, are:

– The degree of more than 600,000.

– The process with the Special Assets Society (SAE) to lease 125,000 hectares to peasant organizations.

José Félix Laufaurie, president of the Colombian Federation of Livestock Farmers (Fedegán), He said that a great agreement has been reached that will bring tranquility to the rural sector and, at the same time, the possibility that “a middle class is consolidated that is capable of responding to the challenges of a country that must necessarily be an agri-food power for the world“.

We are very satisfied with the scenarios that the National Government, Minister López, and, of course, President Petro, opened for this purpose. I believe that this promise of value of being a Government that aspires to always have spaces for dialogue and agreement, in the specific case of Fedegán, was fully realizedLaufaurie said.

In turn, Minister López added: “This is a step towards total peace and it is the process of fulfilling the Havana peace agreement. We are going to sign an agreement and a methodology that is going to be done, as I have said in Congress, with filigree: efficient, transparent and in the shortest time possible. This is accompanied by the package from the Rural Development Agency so that it stays in productive projects”.

The signing and details of the agreement will be announced this Friday, October 7.
