After Venezuela, Trump threatens to take Greenland and attack Colombia

One day after bombing Venezuela and kidnapping President Nicolás Maduro, the President of the United States (USA), Donald Trump, threatened to annex Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory linked to Denmark, and suggested military action against the Colombian government, led by Gustavo Petro. After Venezuela, Trump threatens to take Greenland and attack Colombia

The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, issued a statement stating that the USA does not have any right to annex any of the countries in the Kingdom of Denmark.

“I have to say this very directly to the United States: it makes absolutely no sense to talk about the need for the US to take possession of Greenland,” Frederiksen said..

The head of the European State recalled that Denmark is part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and is covered by the security guarantee of the military alliance, which is headed by the USA itself.

“We already have a defense agreement between the Kingdom and the United States, which grants the US broad access to Greenland. And we, on the Kingdom’s side, have invested significantly in security in the Arctic,” he added.

The Prime Minister of Denmark also called for an end to the threats.

“I strongly insist that the US cease threats against a historic ally and against another country and people that have already made it clear that they are not for sale,” he concluded.

On a social network, Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens Frederik Nielsen, said the threat was unacceptable.

“When the president of the United States says “we need Greenland” and links us with Venezuela and military intervention, it’s not just wrong. It’s so disrespectful. Our country is not the subject of superpower rhetoric,” he commented.

In an interview with the magazine The AtlanticTrump stated, this Sunday (4), that Washington “needs” Greenland for national security.

“[Precisamos da Groenlândia] not because of minerals, we have several places for minerals and oil, more than any country in the world. We need Greenland for our national security. If you look at Greenland, look up and down the coast, there are Russian and Chinese ships everywhere,” said the head of the White House.

Threats to annex the territory in the far north of the American continent have been coming since Trump took office in January 2025.

This Sunday’s new threat was rejected by other European heads of state, such as neighbors Finland, Norway and Sweden. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said only Greenland and Denmark should decide the territory’s future.

“And Denmark is a close ally in Europe, it is a NATO ally and it is very important that the future of Greenland is for the Kingdom of Denmark and for Greenland itself, and only for Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark,” Starmer told the English public broadcaster BBC.

Colombia

In addition to Greenland, Trump also threatened a military action in Colombiaby leftist president Gustavo Petro, critic of the White House’s policies towards Latin America. The US president said military action against the Petro government “looks good”.

“Colombia is also very sick, run by a sick man, who likes to produce cocaine and sell it to the US,” and he’s not going to keep doing that for long,” Trump told reporters.

The president of Colombia rejected the US president’s accusations.

“I’m not illegitimate, nor a drug dealer; my only asset is my family’s house, which I still pay for with my salary. My bank statements have been made public”, he recalled.

“I have enormous faith in my people, and that is why I asked them to defend the president against any illegitimate act of violence. The way to defend me is to take power in every municipality in the country. The order for the security forces is not to shoot at the people, but at the invaders”, he added.
