Following Donald Trump’s announcement that Brazilian products sold to the United States will be taxed by 50%, exporting companies in Brazil seek ways to postpone the impact of the measure.
In the city of Ipumirim, in Santa Catarina, an exporting company of the timber sector announced on Tuesday (29) that he has been collective vacation to almost 500 employees. The company manufactures wooden frames to the foreign market – 95% of the total for the United States.
The decision to reduce operations was motivated by the suspension last week of export contracts that had not yet been sent to the ports.
In a statement to the market and employees, the group says the measure “aims to wait for both governments to reach an agreement, allowing commercial activities to continue flowing.”
With almost 500 direct employees, only one sector with 15 should continue working.
In addition to frames, the company also operates in the manufacture of pallets to the domestic market and wooden doors and ready -made doors for Brazil and Uruguay and Paraguay. Considering the entire production of the company, the percentage of trade with the United States is around 50%.
Tariffs
The US has announced that they will tax products from various countries, and Brazil had the highest rate announced: 50% over all exports.
United States Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, said on Tuesday that some unlavoded products, such as coffee, mango and pineapple, could enter the United States without import tariff, but exemption depends on according to Brazil and the United States.
