The politician’s murder was confirmed by state prosecutor Sara Bruna Quiñónez Estrada, who reported in a message posted on social media that Cuén Ojeda had been killed after being the victim of a gunshot attack.
For years, Sinaloa has been the scene of violence due to a dispute between the Sinaloa Cartel and the Beltrán Leyva. That state is a key territory for drug trafficking and now a strategic point for distributing fentanyl.
In January 2023, after the capture of Ovidio Guzmán López, “El Ratón”, several points in Sinaloa were paralyzed by a wave of violence.
Mobility was halted due to the presence of blockades on avenues in Culiacán, Guamuchil, Guasave and Los Mochis and the Government of Culiacán decided to suspend activities and the Secretary of Public Security of Sinaloa, Cristóbal Castañeda, asked residents to take shelter.
Patients saw their appointments and medical examinations cancelled at the General Hospital of Mazatlán, as well as the hospitals of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Culiacán, where citizens were evacuated.
Schools closed their doors in Culiacán, while authorities announced the suspension of all educational activities and called on teachers and administrative staff to take shelter and avoid moving from one municipality to another. Calm returned as the hours passed.
But as of this Friday and after the capture of “Mayo” Zambada, the government of Sinaloa has not issued any recommendation or statement.
