Alarmed with cases of intoxication in the state of São Paulo, due to methanol intake in adulterated beverages, the Brazilian Beverage Association (Abrabe) and the Brazilian Association of Neuro-Oftalmology (ABNO) published notes with alerts about the situation.
ABRADE has expressed its “deep concern and solidarity with victims and family” after confirmation of cases of intoxication, which include two deaths, due to methanol intake mixed with adulterated drinks.
“[A entidade] It acts strongly in combating the illegal beverage market, guidance on compliance with industry technical and regulatory requirements and promoting responsible consumption. “

Blindness
The Brazilian Association of Neuro-Oftalmology warned about the risks of methanol consumption causing optical neuropathy, “a serious disease that can cause loss of irreversible vision,” describes the note sent to Brazil agency.
According to the Association, Between 12 hours and 24 hours after consumption, symptoms of intoxication may emerge such as “headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, mental confusion and especially sudden cloudy vision or even blindness.”
According to ABNO, the diagnosis should be made from the patient’s clinical history and blood and image tests.
Treatment should be immediate and using antidotes (such as venous ethanol), bicarbonate to correct blood acidity, vitamins (folic/folic acid) and, in more severe cases, hemodialysis to remove poison.
