The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, guaranteed help from the municipality to traders who suffered losses in the fire that hit the Uruguaiana camelódromo, a popular commerce hub in the city center, this Sunday (12). He also stated that he intends to renovate the place, improving the infrastructure.
Paes cited as a reference the recovery work carried out at Mercadão de Madureira, a commercial center in the north of the capital of Rio de Janeiro that was devastated in a fire in 2000.
“I’ve already told the traders who unfortunately lost their business that we’re going to help. We’re going to rebuild. So everyone here can rest assured. But I hope to be able to do this in a more organized way, with a better structure. I think there’s a beautiful example in the city of Rio, which is the Mercadão de Madureira. It also caught fire there, it was a bit of a mess like here and it was completely recovered. mallwith great quality”, said the mayor.
More than 60 firefighters from 10 different fire stations were mobilized in the morning to fight the fire at the camelódromo from Uruguaiana. On social media, residents shared images of the flames and smoke, which were seen from different parts of the city. Paes traveled to the location to monitor the situation.
“We need to congratulate the work of the Fire Department, which was very quick. It prevented it from being a bigger problem. This is not the first time that this has happened. In the other government, we had a fire here. It is not possible to say who is responsible Now I think there’s an opportunity here for us to do something more definitive and with more quality”, he stated.
According to a statement released by the Fire Department, there is no record of victims in the incident. The fire reached part of the camelódromo’s pits. The affected stores are located at the intersection of Rua dos Andradas and Rua Senhor dos Passos, close to the entrance to the metro station, which was closed as a precaution. Civil Defense has closed the entire camelódromo for an indefinite period of time and an inspection will be carried out to better assess the situation.
The causes of the fire will be investigated by the Civil Police. The Uruguaiana camelódromo stores sell a wide variety of products, such as cell phones and other electronic equipment, stationery and party items, clothes, footwear and food.
The Municipal Guard, the Traffic Engineering Company (CET-Rio), the Municipal Urban Cleaning Company (Comlurb) and the energy services concessionaire Light also sent teams to the site. Rua Uruguaiana had to be closed and traffic was diverted along Rua Buenos Aires.
