After complaints, the Prosecutor’s Office initiates an investigation into an episode of contamination in Quintero and Puchuncaví

After three complaints filed with Carabineros, the Valparaíso Regional Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation into the new contamination episode that affected Quintero and Puchuncaví.

Since Monday, about 100 people have arrived at health centers with symptoms associated with intoxication. This, attributed to an exceedance in sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions during June 6.

“Yesterday, three complaints from Carabineros arrived at this local prosecutor’s office, reporting the massive intoxication of adults and schoolchildren from the areas of Puchuncaví, Las Ventanas and Quintero,” said Quintero’s chief prosecutor, louis venturapick up emmol.

“The three causes were grouped into just one, and an order to investigate was dispatched to the Bidema (Investigative Brigade of Crimes Against Public Health and the Environment), giving a period of 30 days to report,” he added.

Both the Seremi for the Environment and the regional governor of Valparaíso, Rodrigo Mundakablamed Codelco Ventanas for this episode and urged the companies to urgently make adjustments to their operational plans.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Environment announced the application of provisional measures against Codelco and AES Gener (today AES Andes), so that they advance the new standards of the modifications of the operational plans, whose updating will be coordinated by the Seremi of the Environment and the Superintendence of the Environment.

For its part, the Education Seremi of the Valparaíso Region announced the suspension of classes in schools and kindergartens for Quintero and Puchuncaví until Friday (inclusive).
