After the permits to grow Sweet Pea flowers were granted, it brought employment benefits to many peasant families, since 70% of the workforce are women from rural areas.
News Colombia.
For approximately two years, a Colombian company has been working together with ICA to import Sweet Pea seeds to Colombia.
The initiative for this process was the company Ikebana CO SAS and after reviewing the corresponding requirements and permits, the sowing of this seed began, which had not been sown previously in the country.
Likewise, it is highlighted that 70% of the floriculture workforce is 100% rural women.
Also, for the production of this flower, double the labor is needed, thus boosting the generation of employment for people in rural areas in the country.
“We applaud this initiative that contributes to the development of the Colombian countryside and the generation of employment for rural families,” said Wilkien Ramírez, deputy manager of Border Protection at ICA.
These people received training with producers from both Colombia and Japan, regarding production in order to comply with quality standards.
Therefore, after several pilot tests, Sweet Pea flowers were obtained, ideal for export.
As a result of the good production, with a small amount of flowers, the first export to the US market began.
Moreover, it is also expected to export these flowers to markets in Europe, the Netherlands, Korea, among other countries.
Likewise, Colombia is expected to be a pioneer in the production and export of this Japanese flower in the country.
Finally, Camilo Camargo, manager of Ikebana, appreciates the support of ICA in the process, and also achieving the export of many more varieties.
