The Federal Supreme Court (STF) sentenced, in the last two years, 371 people out of the more than two thousand investigated for participating in the coup attacks on January 8, 2023. The balance was released this Tuesday (7) by the office of minister Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the processes related to the case.
So far, 225 convicts have had their crimes classified as serious. In total, 898 defendants were held responsible, with 527 people participating in lighter actions and making agreements with the Federal Public Ministry (MPF).
The sentences for these defendants range from three years to 17 years and six months in prison. On that date, 2,172 prisoners were arrested for participating in some way in the attacks on the Three Powers buildings.
Outlaws
According to the survey, at least 122 people are considered fugitives. In relation to half of this amount (61), measures were adopted to request extradition from other countries.
In this case, these people monitored by an electronic ankle monitor broke the equipment and left Brazil. After they are extradited, they must serve their sentences in a closed regime.
Crimes
The convictions occurred for five types of crimes: attempted abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup d’état, qualified damage, criminal association and deterioration of public property.
Incitement and criminal association were considered simpler crimes. In these situations, 146 people were convicted, but were not arrested and must wear an electronic ankle bracelet for a year, pay a fine, provide 225 hours of community service and participate in an in-person course on democracy.
These convicts were prohibited from using social networks during this period and from traveling, even within Brazil, without judicial authorization.
To date, five people have been acquitted.
Fines
The 527 people involved who made agreements with the MP paid fines that totaled R$1.7 million. In addition to the fines, they were required to perform 150 hours of community service and cannot maintain profiles on social networks open during the term of the agreement.
They must also attend a course on the functioning of democracy offered by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF).
