Afghanistan and Iran to expand economic and political ties

Qomi, leading a delegation, arrived in Kabul on Monday and held talks with various officials of the Islamic Emirate, including Deputy Prime Minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the TOLO news channel reported.

Muttaqi said the Iranian delegation was made up of technical teams from different ministries who held talks with the relevant Afghan counterparts.

He added that issues related to economic cooperation, border issues and Afghan refugees in Iran will be discussed.

“The Afghan people and the new government of Afghanistan want to have good relations with neighboring countries and the world, especially with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said.

For his part, Qomi said that they had good conversations with officials of the Islamic Emirate, especially about economic cooperation.

Qomi further noted that Afghanistan is under sanctions and Iran is seeking to expand its economic cooperation with Kabul at this crucial juncture.

“We had positive and constructive conversations on different issues, including expanding cooperation between the two countries, mainly in the economic sector and issues related to borders,” he said.

He added that some countries are trying to destabilize Afghanistan through their proxies, so Iran is working to cooperate with this country also in the field of security.

“Today, the Afghan people are under pressure from terrorist groups that are supported by foreigners,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, Muttaqi, expressed in an interview with the Pakistani channel Geo News, that the enmity between the Taliban and the United States ended and now Kabul wants to have diplomatic relations with Washington.

Muttaqi also argued that the United States must release Afghanistan’s assets and the international community recognize the new Taliban government.

Afghanistan is on the brink of economic collapse and with international funding exhausted, and it is reeling under the effects of a severe drought.

Since the rise to power of the Taliban movement, Afghanistan has been mired in a humanitarian crisis and needs urgent international aid.

The radical Islamic fundamentalist armed group conquered Kabul last August, while the United States and NATO pulled out their troops after 20 years of occupation and billions of dollars in war spending, as well as thousands of civilians killed.

Today, the Central Asian country is poorer than it was two decades ago, with five million internally displaced people and almost 23 million people threatened by hunger.
