The Jorge Newbery airport operated normally this Saturday despite the intense fog, which affected 45 flights because these crews and aircraft did not have the same aeronautical certification as the air terminal, which is from category two, which enables it to operate even with visibility at 300 metersinformed the Ministry of Transportation of the Nation.
Of the 45 flights that were affected, 11 of them were cancelled, 17 are “delayed” and another 17 were diverted to alternative airports, such as Ezeiza, which operated normally this Saturday.
The operation of the air station was possible thanks to its recent elevation to Category 2, achieved with the infrastructure works, technology carried out and the training received by all the organizations of the aeronautical sector.
In this way, the minimum visibility to be able to operate went from 700 to 300 meters, which allows it to continue providing service in adverse weather conditions, such as those of this Saturday.

The reason why there were so many affected flights was that in order to operate in Category 2, certification by the aeronautical authority is necessary, not only of the airport, but also of the crews and aircraft.
In the case of airlines that do not have the corresponding certifications, they cannot operate even though the airport does provide service in that category, something that is registered, both in the Jorge Newbery airport and in Ezeiza, with certain aircraft and crews, and it is the one that causes cancellations and diversions.
The fog began to be more intense from 2:00 p.m. and visibility was zero after 4:00 p.m., which became more pronounced as the hours went by, until well into the night.
The weather forecast is not encouraging, since conditions will remain that way until dawn, when storms of varying intensity are expected over Buenos Aires.
The metropolitan air station operates mostly domestic flights and some regional flights to Peru, Chile, Colombia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
