Given the statements of the tourism minister, David Colladothat the Las Americas International Airport is the aerial infrastructure with further delays in your renovation, Dominican Airports 21st Century (Aerodom) noted that it has already invested more than 30 million dollars for improvements to the terminal.
In a statement, the concessionaire company The state airport explained that this money has been invested in projects that include the remodeling of the departure and arrival areas, renovation of roofs and facades, updating lighting, air conditioning, information systems and expanding the parking lot.
He maintained that only the parking lot has been modernized with more spaces long-lasting, new bearing layer, improvements in vehicular flow and renovation of green areas.
“From Aerodom we have complied with the committed improvements in the existing terminal and we are making steady progress in the construction of the new terminal of the AILA“he pointed out.
Sustainability
Likewise, the company spoke of the the construction of a 3,600 square meter roof to collect and reuse rainwater, in addition to installing a 1.3 MWP solar plant, which raised the total capacity of the airport’s solar park to 5 MWP, all as part of efforts to make operations more sustainable.
This, as indicated in the statement, involved the modernization of the façade of the terminal building with ventilated type coatings. “The only project still in execution within this phase is the new Baggage Handling System (BHS), which will incorporate state-of-the-art equipment and triple redundancy,” he added.
New terminal AILA
Aerodom stated that the new terminal of the AILA –a work worth more than 350 million dollars and 35,000 square meters distributed over three levels – is moving forward.
It will have:
- 38 counters
- 10 boarding gates
- An Energy Center powered by solar energy.
He reported that this infrastructure is planned to enter into operations in the 2028 “without affecting the continuity of current operations.”
“During the last few months we have worked on the preliminary worksin architectural design—by Ameller Dubois and Luis Vidal Architects— and in the technical planning of construction,” he stressed.
In the coming weeks, the company hopes to install the construction site, the concrete plant and four cranes large, which will mark the visible beginning of an intense stage of work, accompanied by a robust communication and signage plan to maintain a fully operational airport.
“The new terminal will raise to AILA to a world-class standard, will support the growth of air traffic, boost tourism and strengthen the country’s position as a Caribbean hub,” he assured.
He recalled that the terminal will have the construction of Holiday Inn hotel Santo Domingo Airport —the first inside an airport in the country—, under development by TVP Management and Sofisa.
“Our commitment is: modernize, enlarge and transform the AILA with responsibility, sustainability and technical rigor,” he concluded.
During a tourism promotion event in New York, Tourism Minister David Collado indicated that the AILA renovation work is the most behind schedule compared to the modernization of other air terminals.
“The airports of our country have to catch up to the level that the flow of tourists, but also Dominicans, is demanding,” he stated.
He insisted that AILA “must speed up the work a little more” given the growing flow of tourists and Dominicans.
