MIAMI, United States. — The playwright Adonis Milan, who for several years directed the company in Cuba Persephone Theaterlamented the forced exile that Cubans who openly oppose the island’s regime must suffer.
Milan revealed in his profile Facebook that not returning to Cuba was the condition imposed by State Security to let him leave the country.
“My exile was not in gratifying conditions. I was forced to sign a document by State Security, where it said ´that if I leave Cuba I would not be able to re-enter´”, explained the artist.
The playwright explained that leaving the Island was the solution he found to put an end to the persecution and constant harassment against him and his actors.
“After Ricardo II’s last function, the periodic interviews with State Security began again. The threats against me and my actors were constant in those interrogations. I was interrogated by Yordan, an old beast of Cuban counterintelligence, who wanted to get information from me about my actor Daniel Triana, asking me to incite him to leave the country.”
Adonis Milan assured that if he had stayed in Cuba he would probably now be in prison.
“I was regulated when Documenta invited me. They took this regulation away from me with the threat that I could not return to Cuba, or I would be imprisoned for my work in the independent theater and my supposed links with the US government. I did not make this situation public, to protect my creative work against Perséfone Teatro”, added the playwright.
However, the artist confessed that the forced exile has been too harsh.
“Today I am lost and depressed, without my beloved theater, without my actors, without a house, without a job, without a family and without anything. My exile is not happy, it is a painful exile and even more knowing that I cannot return to my country.
