Santo Domingo.- Mayor Carolina Mejía headed the fifth edition of Plastics for Toys, during which more than three million 732,056 plastic bottles were collected at the Municipal Palace of the National District.
On the eve of Three Kings’ Day, thousands of families lined up in an organized manner to exchange 500 plastic bottles for a bicycle and 300 for a skateboard, bringing joy to the children with their new toys.
The mayor of the National District described as enormous the joy she feels for the effort made by her team of collaborators from the council and for the impulse of the sponsors who once again supported this great activity.
“What we see in the faces of the people, our boys and girls, is something that justifies the reason why we do public service, it is what gives us the strength to continue doing it because those faces, that joy of being able to receive in “compensation for the work of collecting little bottles, is what also gives us that great reward,” indicated the municipal executive.
Mejía praised the new order and security mechanisms that were added this year, including weighing outside the premises, with which people were already approaching the perimeter of the Municipal Palace with their tickets to exchange them for toys.
Carolina Mejía assured that Plastics for Toys It is an activity that is carried out with immense love, but it also highlighted the educational and well-being purpose that is promoted through recycling.
The more than 3.7 million bottles collected in the fifth version of Plastics for Toys are added to the more than 14 delivered in the four previous editions and in Plastics for Schoolchildren.
The Botellas de Amor Foundation will receive the plastic bottles to turn them into urban park furniture.
The fifth version of Plastics for Toys was possible thanks to the support of Propagas, Banreservas, Banco Popular, Banco BHD, Café Santo Domingo, Dominicana Compañía de Seguros, Martí, Uepa Tickets, Coca-Cola, Hilos de Amor, McDonald’s and Farmacias GBC.
