On the eve of the leaders’ meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum APEC 2024the director of the Research Center on Global Economy and Business of the CIEN-ADEX Exporters Association, Edgar Vásquez Vela, highlighted the fundamental role of the summit as a cooperation platform, which will allow Peru to strengthen its commercial relations and open new opportunities for economic growth.

In addition to being a space for political collaboration between members, he continued, APEC brings common problems to the table, promoting the exchange of solutions, knowledge and technology, contributing to the development and well-being of its populations.
Vásquez said that it represents a huge opportunity for the Peruvian economy in terms of employment and growth. “Through cooperation projects and the promotion of exports, the APEC forum can have a positive impact on our economy, generating employment and strengthening our productive sector, especially manufacturing, which in recent years has lost competitiveness,” he explained.
On the other hand, he highlighted its relevance as a channel to promote Peruvian supply, particularly those in the agroindustrial sector, in key markets such as China, Indonesia and Hong Kong.
“Let us remember that this economic bloc encompasses close to 40% of the world’s population and 50% of global trade. In addition, it includes the possibility of updating free trade agreements and exploring new markets,” said Vásquez.
In this context, he also highlighted the importance of innovation and education as pillars to improve the competitiveness and diversification of Peruvian products in the global arena. “As host, Peru will reaffirm its commitment to economic integration and sustainable growth, boosting national export potential and strengthening its trade relations with the most dynamic economies in the world,” he noted.
In addition to its commercial importance, APEC will position the country as an attractive tourist destination, because although the leaders’ visits to tourist spots will be restricted for security reasons, international delegations will be able to discover the cultural and natural wealth of Peru, thus reinforcing their image outside.
Pending task
The director of CIEN-ADEX also made reference to the demonstrations that have occurred due to the strong wave of crime in recent weeks, which shows the political and social instability in our nation.
“It is essential that, during the leaders’ summit, the Government prioritizes constructive dialogue and avoids acts of violence that could deteriorate the international image of Peru. A stable and safe climate must be ensured during the summit,” he said.
