Add new candidates to the National Congress

On December 18 and April 30, 2023, the presidential elections and the general elections will be held.

A little more than 10 months later, some of the figures that will fight for legislative positions are already beginning to be made known.

Although there is no official list yet, we review below some of the names that are mentioned that could include the list of their respective movements.

OFFICIALISM
In the Colorado ruling party, Mauricio Espínola, political advisor to Mario Abdo Benítez, would fight for a place in the Chamber of Deputies. So too Rodrigo Fretes Llanes, director and private secretary of the Ministry of Public Works (MOPC). On the other hand, Hugo Ramírez and Juan Carlos Osorio announced that they will appear again for another period.

As for the Senate, the new figures that will be presented are; Carlos Arrechea, Governor of Misiones, Juan Manuel Brunetti, Minister of Education (MEC), Bernardino Soto Estigarribia, Minister of National Defense (MDN), Carla Bacigalupo, Minister of Labor and Carmen Alonso, head of the Directorate of Charity and Social Assistance ( Diben).

Those who have already confirmed that they will seek re-election are Lilian Samaniego, Juan Afara, Enrique Bacchetta and Blanca Ovelar.

CHARTISM
In the “Honor Colorado” movement there is a striking particularity, a large majority of deputies aspire to the Senate. Those who have already confirmed are Derlis Maidana, Del Pilar Medina, Basilio “Bachi” Núñez and María Cristina Villalba.

Deputies David Rivas and Néstor Ferrer will seek re-election in the Lower House. One of the new figures that appears as a candidate for deputy of the movement is Rodrigo Gamarra, current president of the Ytororó Country Club.

Deputy Walter Harms publicly affirmed that he received the request from Horacio Cartes and Santiago Peña to join the list of the Chamber of Senators. However, the legislator has not yet defined the high costs involved in a candidacy for senatorship, unlike the lower house.

Only roughly, a candidate for deputy, from a traditional party, spends between G. 500 to G. 1,000 million to carry out a successful campaign. While, for the Senate, the cost can even reach G. 2 billion.

THIRD SPACE
As for the progressive parties and those of the third space, Johanna Ortega, former mayor for Asunción, is one of the candidates for the Chamber of Deputies for the Solidarity Country party. Juan Galeano Grassi, former mayor for PEN, also aspires to a place in the Lower House. For the Guasu Front appears Luis Paciello, son-in-law of former president Fernando Lugo, who aspires to run for deputy for Central and Luis Narvaja, former mayor for Asunción for deputy for capital.

PLRA
One of the few official announcements in the Liberal Party was that of Eduardo Nakayama, former mayor of Asunción, who now aspires to the Senate.
