Three weeks before the climate change summit in Egypt begins, organizations from vulnerable countries are calling for more emphasis on adaptation, since the damage to populations is becoming more evident. Droughts, fires, food insecurity and migration are some of the consequences, they pointed out.
At the COP 27 conference of the parties on climate change, from November 6 to 18, financing is expected to be addressed in addition to the fact that countries must update their climate commitments to reduce the emissions gap, as ordered by the Glasgow Pact, approved at COP 26.
In Mexico, Greenpeace, Climate Initiative, among other organizations, pointed out that the country has the opportunity to endorse its commitment to Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. They recalled that the NDC presented in 2020 is suspended because it is regressive compared to that of 2015, but this is a legal impediment to presenting a new commitment at COP 27.
They said that Mexico must redouble its efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change, starting by presenting a more ambitious NDC in Egypt. They made a joint call for the federal government to lead the effort so that the NDC that Mexico presents at COP 27 is a commitment that closes the gap between what Mexico emits and its fair contribution to the global reduction of emissions.
In a virtual press conference convened by the World Resources Institute and member countries of Act2025, a coalition of vulnerable nations, Mohamed Adow, director of PowerShift Africa, said that they are experiencing a year of extremes, lack of food, and the region has seen many people selling houses and losing their assets, this year is the pinnacle of implementation. We have to adapt, that is why issues of financing, loss and damage are important

loss and damage
Saleemul Huq, director of the International Center for Climate Change and Development in Bangladesh, considered that the United Nations has not been able to prevent the impacts of global warming, adaptation has been made, but incorrectly. We have entered the period of loss and damage, he said.
Chukwumerije Okereke, director of the UK/Nigeria Center for Climate Change and Development, considered that adaptation and mitigation should be seen as two pillars, but in practice more resources have been given to mitigation.
