On August 26, 2021, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador made a move in his cabinet. Although it was an expected change, in the Ministry of the Interior, the appointment was surprising: Adán Augusto López as a substitute for Olga Sánchez Cordero.

He would entrust his countryman with the construction of bridges and the dialogue with the governors, as well as the relationship with the other powers.
“Adán Augusto enters the relay because we need to continue with the transformation process. And Adan is going to help me to take charge of all political public affairs: the relationship with governors, the respectful relationship with the Attorney General’s Office, the relationship -also respectful- with the Judiciary, especially with the Supreme Court of Justice, and what has to be addressed in the Legislative Branch. The new reform initiatives that we are going to send are three that we need,” said the president on August 31 when explaining the appointment of López Hernández as head of Segob.
In the 365 days that he has been in charge of the agency, Adán Augusto López has become the right hand of the president Andrés Manuel López Obrador and for several months he has been seen as a serious possibility to head a presidential candidacy, a nomination for which he will compete with the head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum; with Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, and with any other Morenoite who seeks to be Morena’s candidate for the Presidency of the Republic.
“Adán Augusto López arrives with the right foot. He jumps into public life because although he was governor of Tabasco, he was little known at the national level. He is seen as a good negotiator, which was what the Secretariat needed, but also someone with character, who knows the political system. Once the president ‘uncovers it’, everything he does adds up to the construction of a candidacy”, he affirms. Ivonne Acuna, political scientist and professor at the Universidad Iberoamericana.
Adán Augusto López has accompanied López Obrador for years. In the first contest for the presidency of the Republic of his countryman, in 2006, López Hernández was in charge of coordinating the presidential campaign in Campeche, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Veracruz and Yucatán.
