The well-known actress Susan Sarandon, one of the protagonists of the film Thelma and Louisewas arrested for protesting at the New York State Capitol.
According to news reports, Sarandon, 76, was participating in a protest against a new law that excludes tipped restaurant workers from benefiting from the same minimum wage increase as their non-tipped counterparts.
New York state lawmakers have confirmed plans to raise the minimum wage to $17 an hour, but exclude restaurant workers, who typically receive tips.
Activists from the One Fair Wage group flocked to the New York State Capitol. Hollywood legend Sarandon was among them.
Members of One Fair Wage, which also includes former New York Lieutenant Governor candidate Ana María Archila, took to the forecourt of the state Capitol chanting, “A fair wage!”
Sarandon was among those handcuffed for disorderly conduct.
The activists were prosecuted and later released.
