The start of the activities corresponding to the Spring Festival, commemorating the Chinese New Year 2023 (Year of the Rabbit) will begin this Friday, January 20, as announced by the authorities of the National Government of Panama, the Government of the People’s Republic of China in Panama and the National Council of the Chinese Ethnic Group in Panama.
For the second consecutive year, this call was made with the category of country event, said Giselle González, Minister of Culture, indicating that since the first members of the Chinese community migrated to our country in 1850 to work in the construction of the railway, they have left traces of work and respect, before a thriving community that has shared its culture with all ethnic groups in society.
Through a press conference it was explained that by 2023, the celebration of the country event will begin with the Chinese New Year festivities on the weekend of Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 January, to be held at the V Centenario Park in Casco Antiguo from Panama City and simultaneously in various parts of the country, as part of the Spring Festival.
The cities of David, Santiago, Aguadulce, Penonomé, Natá, Bocas del Toro, the Azuero Peninsula and Panama West, in other parts of the national territory will join the celebration, thanks to the efforts of the different Chinese associations and the support of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Panama. The approach towards the economic reactivation of the country will be reflected in Expo Auto and multiple activations in different shopping centers in the country.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Tourism, Iván Eskildsen, explained that the Chinese New Year 2022 was attended by some 75,000 people, of which 25,000 congregated in the Centennial Park and 500,000 in the different points, in order to consolidate Panama in terms of its richness and cultural diversity.
Carlos Liu, Secretary General of the Council of Chinese Ethnic Groups (CONECHI), noted that since the first edition of the 2022 Spring Festival, all the proposed objectives in terms of economic reactivation, tourism and contributions to culture have been achieved.
The cultural and educational secretary of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Panama, Jin Liang expressed his satisfaction and emphasized the projection of Panama internationally as one of the first countries to adopt the Chinese New Year as a country event.
