Activist Lara Crofs is now free: she denounces the consequences of police violence

Activista cubana Yamilka Lafita, conocida como Lara Crofs

LIMA, Peru – The Cuban activist Yamilka Lafitaknown as Lara Crofs, was detained this Friday in Havana by agents of the Cuban regime and reported having been injured during the arrest.

As revealed this February 13 in a complaint by independent journalist José Luis Tan Estrada, the political police on the Island stopped the vehicle in which Lara Crofs was traveling with aid, which she has been distributing to helpless people in recent days.

The activist was arrested along with her partner, Daniela Peral. Both were traveling together and after being intercepted, they lost communication for several hours. After being released, Crofs made a post on Facebook offering information about the arrest and other details that marked the event.

“They confiscated 200 thermo packs and 20 liters of gasoline because we did not have purchase documents. These marks were in the struggle,” states the complaint, in which he attached an image of the bruise on his right arm.

Despite the Castro dictatorship’s attempts at repression, Crofs stressed that he was going to stop his humanitarian work.

“They had to recognize that we are not violating any law and let us go. If you want to know what I’m talking about with the people on the street, stop and talk to them, take charge of the people, they are your responsibility. We continue, thank you all for your support and concern,” the publication notes.

In recent years, Lafita has been frequent target of harassment of the repressive organs of the State Security of the regime. Last August, she suffered another similar “kidnapping,” as she herself describes this type of incident.

On that occasion, Crofs was arrested on the capital corner of Zapotes and Flores. She was also injured, with a grade 2 sprain in her right foot, caused by “an unjustified push by a patrolman,” after resisting getting into the police vehicle.
