Activist Camila Cabrera leaves Cuba due to harassment by State Security

MADRID, Spain.- The Cuban activist Camila Cabrera Rodríguez left the island in recent days due to constant harassment by State Security.

“I left Cuba convinced that there is no other way than to fulfill the responsibility of returning all those who were detained to their homes,” Rodríguez said in a message posted on Twitter where he also called for the release of political prisoners.

In the same social network remembered that since the repression and harassment began after 9/11, he has not stopped “reporting and being consistent with his own commitments.”

“We have continued to accompany and guide the families, and it has been their claims that we have transmitted,” added the young woman, who graduated in Philology from the University of Havana in 2014.

In interview with Cuban newspaper The activist explained: ”After several interrogations with State Security, in which my options were to be imprisoned or surrounded by the police until they wanted, I decided to lower my profile, work anonymously and make them think that I had taken away, it was the only way to ensure that I could continue working”.

Regarding his departure from the country towards Europe, he considered: “Now begins a new stage of evaluations and difficult decision-making.”

Camila Cabrera Rodríguez was among the activists arrested on January 31 of this year for joining the relatives of the 33 9/11 protesters who were being tried at the Diez de Octubre Municipal Court. After that, she was besieged for 26 days without being able to leave her house.

The non-governmental organization Justicia 11J, to which Rodríguez belongs, he pointed that his case is not the only one of its members who have been forced to emigrate recently. In this regard, she mentioned the names of Kirenia Núñez Pérez, María Matienzo Puerto and Cynthia de la Cantera.
