Tempers flared this morning in front of the National Palace Come in cops pensioners tired of demanding the payment of benefits after their retirement, and cops assets in charge of security around Government House.
Pensioners from the National Police and the Armed Forces struggled to get through the fence inside which they were allowed to protest, something that law enforcement officials avoided. Many of them came to occupy Mexico Avenue, interrupting their traffic in an east-west direction, and that of Doctor Delgado Avenue.
The veterans ended up withdrawing from the streets and communicating their demands peacefully, although with threats from some to block traffic on Las Américas Avenue in the next occasion.
Since they were withdrawn on March 2, 2,712 cops and military wait for the payment of labor benefits and salary per year.
They also demand a salary increase for retirees, which must occur every time the active salary is increased at a rate of 80%.
General Damián Arias Matos, of the National Association of Reserves of the Armed Forces and the National Police (ASONARE), said that they also demand the elimination of article 156 of the Organic Law of the Armed Forces (139-13), because with he removed the obligation to promote soldiers who have completed the statutory time for it at the time of their retirement.
On the other hand, Law 139-13 grants only the retirement benefits corresponding to the next higher grade, but “not to hold that grade.”
The coverage of the National Health Insurance (Senasa) makes them embarrassed when they go to the doctor, they say, so they ask for better health insurance.
A commission of them delivered a statement with 10 demands in National Palace. They warn the Government that they have a memory of what is happening and 2024 is coming that way.
