Act at USP defends national sovereignty in the face of Trump's tariff

Representatives of social movements, political parties, jurists, universities, trade unions and civil society organizations held this Friday (25) act in defense of national sovereignty. The event was held at the University of São Paulo Law School (USP), at Largo São Francisco, in the center of São Paulo.Act at USP defends national sovereignty in the face of Trump's tariff

A manifesto was read during the act with criticism of attempts to intervene in Brazilian democracy. The act occurs in the face of the rates imposed on Brazilian products by US President Donald Trump, on the grounds that former President Jair Bolsonaro, defendant for attempted coup d’état in the Supreme Court (STF), was suffering persecution in the country.

The manifesto, signed by the organizations participating in the act, repudiates any “form of intervention, intimidation or admonition” with the purpose of intimidating or threatening the country.

“Intromissions foreign to the national legal order are inadmissible. At this serious moment, when national sovereignty is attacked in a vile and unseemly manner, civil society mobilizes, once again, in the defense of citizenship, the integrity of institutions and social and economic interests of all Brazilians,” says the letter.

The document also points out that Brazilian legislation allows all accused the right to broad defense and that proceedings are judged based on evidence, “and decisions are necessarily motivated and public.”

“We demand the same respect that we dispense with other nations. We repudiate any and all form of intervention, intimidation or admonition, which seeks to subordinate our freedom as a democratic nation. The Brazilian nation will never give up its sovereignty, so hard conquered.”

More than 100 entities signed the manifesto.

Tariff

The federal government has been trying to revert the imposition of the United States, but, according to authorities, Trump’s management has not opened negotiation channels.

In ceremony in Osasco (SP), President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva made available to negotiate the 50% tax that the US wants to impose to Brazilian exports from August 1st. Lula used the history of the national hero Tiradentes, during the Inconfidência Mineira, to compare the Bolsonaro family action in articulation with Donald Trump, which resulted in the tariff.

In the act at USP, the president of the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), Aloizio Mercadante, said the bank is ready to support companies that can be hit by taxation.
