According to López Obrador, there are countries that reproach exclusion at the Summit of the Americas

Andrés Manuel López Obrador stressed that countries in Central America and Bolivia are unhappy with the exclusion of countries from the Summit. On the other hand, the US reminded the Mexican president that the sanctions on Venezuela are still in force

The crusade of the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to invite Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua to the Summit of the Americas continues. This Wednesday, May 11, he affirmed that there are other Latin American leaders like him who “are not happy” that several countries are left out of the meeting scheduled for the beginning of June.

«Other presidents had already spoken to me, they had already asked me, that they are not happy. For example, the one from Bolivia (Luis Arce) had already told me that he did not consider that appropriate, that it was disrespectful, “said López Obrador.

Arce had already expressed his opinion on Tuesday, May 10, in which he would take a position similar to his Mexican counterpart of not attending the Summit of the Americas if all countries were not invited. Via Twitter He said that an event of this nature cannot be full if its participants are not fully present and, therefore, it would stop attending if the exclusion is maintained; although he did not say if he sent his foreign minister as López Obrador would.

He also stressed that Bolivia’s relations are based on the diplomacy of inclusion, solidarity, and respect for the sovereignty of peoples.

The Mexican president highlighted that on his recent trip to Central America, in which he visited Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Belize and Cuba, he said he had discussed the issue and was even asked for his opinion on the matter.

«We are going to continue with the same, we are going to continue convincing, persuading, that no one is excluded, that everyone participates. I don’t know how I expressed it here textually, but they linked it to Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua,” López Obrador commented.

In his opinion, Washington does not invite Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua because of the pressure from Cuban exiles and because of the midterm elections in Congress and some governorships.

The most recent pronouncement of the United States on the subject was the one made by Jen Psakithe outgoing White House spokeswoman, who limited herself to saying that the invitations to the Summit of the Americas had not yet been issued.

But, the US remains there arguing. It must be remembered that López Obrador tHe also said that there was supposedly an agreement already signed between Washington and Caracas to allow an oil company to be able to work freely and extract crude oil; something that was denied by the State Department shortly after such statements were made.

This time, We monitor consulted a spokesman for that instance in the US and who reaffirmed that the sanctions against Venezuela remain in force to protect the financial system of his country.

“Our current sanctions related to Venezuela remain in place (…) US sanctions deprive the Maduro regime of receiving revenue streams that finance repression and line the pockets of regime officials, as well as protect the US financial system from exposure to corrupt and illicit financial flows,” the official said.
