The price of accommodation in the metropolitan region of Belém rose 178.93% in November. The explanation lies in the fact that the capital of Pará practically became the world capital of climate issues last month.
The city hosted the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), from November 10th to 22nd. Before that, it hosted the Climate Summit, on the 6th and 7th, an international meeting that brought together heads of state and government.
Accommodation inflation in Belém was much higher than that recorded in Brazil as a whole, in November (4.09%).
The data is part of the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), released this Wednesday (10) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
The research manager, Fernando Gonçalves, confirms that COP30 is the explanation for the explosion in accommodation prices in Belém. “178% is really quite significant”, he assesses.
Organizers’ concerns
The values requested by room owners in Belém were one of the organizers’ concerns of COP30. Some delegations even reduced the number of representatives they sent.
The IBGE manager clarifies that the increase recorded in the November IPCA refers specifically to the cost in that month. Accommodation expenses paid in advance are not included in the account.
Another cost that stood out in Belém in November is airfare, which rose 25.32%, more than double the increase in the country as a whole (11.90%).
Gonçalves adds that the fact that the month had three holidays (All Souls’ Day, Proclamation of the Republic and Black Consciousness) and the arrival of the end of the year may also have exerted upward pressure on the price of plane tickets.
Regional weight
According to the IPCA methodology, inflation in the metropolitan region of Belém has a weight of 3.94% in the country’s inflation. Greater São Paulo has the largest weight, 32.28%. This means that if the impact on the price of accommodation were in São Paulo, the result would be much more felt in the country’s general inflation.
“Belém had pressure on inflation [nacional]but not as expressive, for example, as if it were São Paulo”, says Fernando Gonçalves.
The IPCA is considered the preview of the country’s official inflation and closed November at 0.18%bringing the index back to the limit of the government’s target
